The Influence of Nutrition During Early Life on Adult Productivity in a Group of Merino Sheep
نویسنده
چکیده
The influence of level of nutrition during pre-natal and early post-natal life on adult body weight a.nd wool growth has been studied. Low levels of nutrition during pre-natal life were associated with reductions in mature body weight (c. 9 per cent.) fleece growth (c. 15 per cent.) and total number of follicles per sheep (c. 8.5 per cent.). Low levels of intake between birth and 16 weeks resulted in reduced body weight at maturity (c. IO per cent.), lower fleece weights (c. 12 per cent.) and smaller output per follicle (c. 10.5 per cent.).

An Overview of Major Genes Affecting Prolificacy in Sheep and Related Mechanisms
The objective of this review is to explore the current developments on major genes working on prolific sheep breeds and the mechanism behind it, while identifying the future working points. Productivity is the ultimate goal of farm animal production and prolificacy is a key feature in determining productivity in farm animals. Ovulation rate in mammals is an intricate process involving genetics ...
متن کاملComparison of feeding value of a treated sea plant, Posidonia australis, with lucerne, pasture and wheat
An experiment was carried out to compare the effect of feeding posidonia australis as a non-conventional feedstuff with cereal straw for sheep maintenance; and to compare seagrass/chicken litter with lucerne hay and pasture for sheep production on a scale such as would be applicable to lot-feeding of sheep in the area of suthern Australia in case of short term feed scarcity. To approach this ta...
متن کاملInvestigating The Effectiveness of Nutrition on The Sexual and Breeding Behaviors in Ghezel Sheep
This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of nutritional supplements containing vitamins, minerals, and ammonia on the sexual and breeding behaviors in Ghezel sheep. To this end, 28 three and half-year old ewes (50±3 kilograms) with the record of giving birth to two lambs and 4 three-year old (90±3.5 kilograms) rams were used. The ewes were divided into two groups of A (i.e., treatment...
متن کاملA genome-wide scan to detect signatures of recent selection in Australian Merino sheep
Domestication and selection are processes that conserve the pattern of genetic diversities between and within populations. Identification of genomic regions that are targets of selection for phenotypic traits is one of the main aims of research in animal genetics. An approach for identifying divergently selected regions of the genome is to compare FST values among loci to estimate the genetic v...
متن کاملPrecision nutrition for Merino ewes
Automatic monitoring of liveweight and weight change is now possible with walk–through weighing systems. Computer–based drafting can incorporate a range of measurements such as pregnancy status, past performance, value–for–wool and value–for–meat to implement decisions on supplementary feeding. The combination of these technologies will provide the option of allocating animals likely to give th...
